Tameside Wellness Centre – Projects
Tameside Wellness Centre
About Tameside Wellness Centre
As part of the local Council’s ongoing leisure stock review and replacement strategy, Tameside Wellness Centre represents the Council’s largest new-build facility to date.
The vision was for a centre that has a strong focus on public health, wellbeing, activity and fun. That has been translated into a design that includes swimming pools, a health suite, a fitness suite and multi-purpose studios. A first-floor courtyard accommodates outdoor health and fitness and sensory garden.
The scheme is focused around the central ‘social interaction space’ combining catering, performance area and library. The traditional reception desk has been replaced with a concierge approach, allowing staff and visitors to mix in a more personal way.
A bold and dramatic aesthetic uses traditional materials in strong forms and colours, with large expanses of glazing offering a dynamic and active frontage to the high street. The building has been massed to respect the smaller scale of its neighbours at the rear, whilst the scale and sparkle of the front elevation and public realm which fronts it befits its civic function.
The centre has been awarded funding from Sport England.
Recognising the positive contribution this facility makes to the local community, the scheme is a 2021 Civic Trust Awards regional finalist and Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year 2020 finalist.
We want to support people in keeping as active and healthy as possible and this will provide even more exciting activities and options that everyone can benefit from. I’m delighted with the backing and funding that Sport England is providing and the support of our partners in bringing these fabulous designs to realisation.
