The refurbishment and extension of the sixth-form college’s Ward Hall building had to consider its location within a Conservation area and its Grade II listed status, the building having originally been built as a private villa in the 1800s.

As it is built across a number of different levels, key areas are unsuitable as a means of escape, limiting use. The aim of this project was to create additional usable space for the college, while respecting the heritage of the existing building.

The extension has been designed to appear as a contemporary addition to the original building. A new entrance was located between the existing buildings, with landscaping used to draw users towards it.

Features and proportions of the main facade have been interpreted using modern building materials with a contemporary style. The completed work includes additional general teaching classrooms for the arts faculty, as well as a gallery and exhibition space.
