RL Hughes Primary School – Projects

The new school in Wigan has been shaped by its unique setting and the needs of its young learners (ages 3-10), with the aspiration to create a modern, flexible learning environment that reflects the local community’s values. Situated within a mature forested landscape, the new single storey school is being constructed on the same site as the existing buildings, which will remain operational throughout the build.

The design is inspired by the surrounding natural environment, with an emphasis on drawing the outdoors into the educational experience. Natural materials, generous views to green spaces, and biophilic design principles have been embedded into the scheme. The intention is to foster a strong connection between the children and their environment promoting wellbeing, curiosity, and a sense of place.
