This prominent 19th century, five-storey spinning mill within a conservation area had fallen into disrepair and required a strategic rethink of its use.

Despite being located in a conservation area, the mill was considered an eyesore. Our solution: rejuvenate the entire site with a 62-bed hotel, retail units, bar, restaurants, 49 apartments and a new 15,575-sq.ft. food retail unit all set within a new public realm courtyard. The derelict Grade II listed gatehouse was also renovated.

Working closely with conservation and heritage officers ensured that as much as possible of the original construction was retained. The classically detailed façade was restored and extended to the rear with a contemporary design and is now in use as a restaurant.

The new-build food retail unit benefits from both a large glazed façade and roof lights which provides a bright environment suitable for a modern occupier and not otherwise available in the town centre.
