Built within the greenbelt, the design for this new build leisure centre was conceived as a sculpture in a park, replacing the original 40-year-old facility within the same grounds.
A covenant on the site restricted the buildings footprint, so the design developed to reduce circulation to below 6%, rather than the 10 -12% typical of other facilities.
The striking design is thermally efficient, with a fabric-first approach supported by biomass boilers, photovoltaic cells and rainwater harvesting. Large expanses of glazing provide plenty of natural daylight, in the evening the illumination provides an eye-catching and active addition to the street scene.
The centre has won numerous Civic Design Awards and is also an exemplar case study on the Sport England website.
