Dementia and Autism Awareness

Today, we welcomed the fantastic team from Training 2 Care to our Altrincham studio for an eye-opening day of training.

We were able to experience simulations of what it can feel like to live with dementia and autism. Barriers that most of us walk past without a second thought suddenly became exhausting, disorienting, even isolating. Sounds, lighting, layout, signage all became obstacles.

Our colleagues, clients, and collaborators took part in the Virtual Dementia Tour and Autism Reality Experience, helping us gain a deeper understanding of the challenges many people face daily.

This is exactly why empathy-driven design matters - because behind every “accessible” checkbox is a real person’s everyday experience, whether that’s someone living with dementia, someone who’s autistic, or countless others navigating spaces not built with them in mind.

Nigel Saunders commented "I did not anticipate quite the level of sensory overload that both of these awareness training sessions provided. They gave an uneasy, yet hugely valuable insight into the types of daily sensory challenges faced by people living with autism and also those living with dementia.

Both experiences were disorientating and disturbing in equal measure, touching all human senses in confusing ways. This will, I’m sure, help us here at Pozzoni in designing environments that are sensitive to the challenges faced by an increasingly large number of people, across all stages of life."
