Objectives
Stockdales is a charity providing care for severely
disabled children and young adults. We have worked
closely with them for over 10 years and this brief
was particularly challenging. The task was to upgrade
and extend an original Stockdales home to provide a
homely care environment for 12 disabled young
people.
Our View
The original Stockdales home provided superb care
from dedicated staff, but the building was a poor
conversion of a Victorian ‘villa’ and had an
‘institutional’ appearance. We felt it essential to
create a relaxing ‘homely’ atmosphere, whilst ensuring
facilities and equipment were tuned to the needs of
the carers and residents.
The works included a comprehensive internal and
external conversion, providing two separate homes,
one for permanent residents, one for respite care.
An extension provided an art/therapy room and a
new lift was inserted. Circulation changed from
tortuous to generous for wheelchair ease; and
outside we provided a sensory garden area.
The Results
Stockdales is seen as a beacon in care provision for
disabled children, where residents really feel ‘at
home’ not ‘in a home’. The completion of the third
scheme for Stockdales, incorporating new methods,
equipment and finishes, demonstrates our passion for
developing the very best in social needs provision. |
