Objectives
To provide supported accommodation for 42 young
single people, with training and care provided on site.
To embrace the Foyer Movement which has become
a real success story in the UK, providing intermediate
‘stepping stone’ support to young adults, often with
challenging backgrounds and behaviour.
To balance security and supervision with the
provision of a supportive and welcoming
environment.
Our View
We felt a compact layout with four storeys was
required on the tight urban infill site.
The main wing was designed to provide 33 single
flats with the ‘L’ shaped wing made up of nine houses
for single parents and their children. These are
located at first and second floor levels, with a secure,
safe ‘play court’ at the first floor level, separated from
the other residents, car parking and distractions at
street level.
The Results
Blackburn with Darwen Foyer is a bright, colourful
addition to the Blackburn streetscape. The enclosed
court provides a calming heart to the scheme,
screened from the bustle and noise of the busy
streets. Crucially it provides the facility for the staff
to give valuable support to vulnerable young adults. |
