Belong, Atherton

New build development on the site of an existing, out-dated care home to provide a 72 bed care home plus 26 extra-care 2 bedroom apartments on a tight urban site. This is a landmark scheme in the town with communal facilities including a cafe. Principles of dementia design have been developed in the design and layout.

Each household has views out to the surrounding neighbourhood plus views into, and access to, the private and secure sensory garden. The kitchens to each household are open and accessible and act as the focus and heart of each home. Residents en-suite bedrooms are light, spacious and homely. Subtle and non-institutional way-finding cues help residents to orientate themselves.

The extensive communal facilities of cafe, hair and beauty salon, community room, healthcare and alternative therapy practitioners facilities serve to act as a neighbourhood hub for the wider community. The benefit to the residents is interest, stimulation and the opportunity for interaction between the residents, their families, staff and the wider community.

Belong Atherton has attracted interest from leading care providers, architects and researchers in the UK and from across the globe. It has also been shortlisted for 'Best Interior Design' in the National Dementia Awards 2011.
