Estate Strategy Masterplan, Aston University
We were initially commissioned to work with Aston University in developing a written estate strategy covering the term from 2009 - 2019 for its Birmingham city centre campus. This work involved analytical review of the university's estate, exploring departmental requirements, estate data including space utilisation, plus identification of opportunities and proposals. The review was carried out in support of the university's strategic objectives and resulted in a high level analysis of the estate's development potential.
Subsequent to the estate strategy, we won an architectural competition and were commissioned to devleop a site-wide master plan. Our work identifies a phased series of proposed developments taking place over a 10 year period. The master plan depicts the evolution of projects currently under way on site, together with new developments requiring demolition of several existing buildings across the campus. Our work is based around a strong urban design and landscape-led approach in the creation of a campus with distinct 'character zones' which respond to specific zonal uses of the estate and its connections to the wider city, its commerce and society.
We presented our work in design report format, supplemented by a conceptual 3-d fly-through model of the entire campus. This work was won through architectural competition.
"the Master Plan document was well received yesterday; I was complimented on the clarity and quality of the plans & documents, coupled with comments that we were suggesting a pragmatic, realistic approach I think we have delivered an exciting vision, so a very well done and all round thank you."
