Pozzoni designed sustainable dementia facility gains planning permission

A design for a sustainable dementia care facility by architecture practice Pozzoni, has been granted planning permission. The Altrincham- based practice developed the design for Huntington House, a nursing home in Hindhead, Surrey.

The facility will comprise two self contained households with ancillary and shared facilities. Each household will contain 14 bedrooms, communal areas, aair salon and a ‘meet and greet' area for relatives and visitors and will feature a sedum roof, natural cross ventilation and timber cladding amongst other carefully selected materials from sustainable sources.

Pozzoni partner Damian Utton explained: "A sedum roof soaks up rainwater, minimising storm water run-off which can then help to reduce localised flooding. Returning it to the atmosphere is more cost effective than ground-based storage systems and any rainwater which is not retained is released much more slowly into the drainage system.

"In addition, green roofs enhance the appearance of the building for both users and local residents, maximising the aesthetic and setting of the building in the context of the surrounding landscape."

Owner of Huntington House, Marilyn Hoare added: "We have given careful consideration to the expansion of Huntington House, determining precisely what would be required to provide an improved level of care and what would complement the existing property. Pozzoni was appointed as architect to develop the proposed facilities in line with our residents' needs because of the practice's extensive experience in the field of sustainable design for dementia requirements."
