Objectives
To design a new concept for a rural, brownfield site
on the edge of Congleton, forming a ‘village’ style
scheme that fits in with the local architecture of the
surrounding Cheshire environment.
To deliver a high density of accommodation, whilst
managing the contentious nature of the
development by close liaison with the Local
Planning Authority.
Our View
We were keen to explore the new ‘village concept’
for Seddon Homes. Prior to commencing our
design work we travelled extensively within the UK
looking at similar, successful schemes. This took us as
far afield as Cambridgeshire and the West Country
as well as areas closer to home, studying the villages
of Cheshire and the design of local architecture. As
a result of our research we designed Georgian town
houses to surround the ‘village green’.Within the
courtyards we placed Cheshire brick cottages focused
around a mature tree.
There was also an opportunity to look at the
internal layout of the houses to make best use of
‘The Green’ and courtyards, for example the
kitchens are designed to overlook the courtyards
ensuring parents can watch their children play and
increasing neighbourhood contact.The living rooms
were placed across the full width of the rear of the
houses to afford views over the countryside beyond.
The Results
Our proposals for ‘The Green’ exceeded our client’s
objectives in terms of an attractive architectural
solution, commercial density and time schedule. |
