“Top building, nice one”
A residents view of the
regenerated tower block
|
 |
Objectives
To refurbish, remodel and upgrade three 13 storey
tower blocks for general let, sheltered accommodation
for the elderly and shared ownership.
To include the residents and local residents groups to
ensure a shared sense of ownership of the project
and a clear understanding of the end user’s needs.
Our View
Built in the 1960s the three tower blocks were
suffering from neglect and poor housing management.
In our view the main issues were better security, the
provision of modern facilities and the inclusion of light
and colour.
On top of essential repairs to brickwork and concrete
we suggested a new roof, feature parapet, exposed
communal balcony, a new entrance ‘pod’ extension,
overcladding of stair tower and a high level colour
feature to create a landmark and identity for each
building.
Each flat has a brand new front door with entry/cctv
systems, kitchen and bathroom all chosen by the
resident. A secure perimeter boundary and
landscaping scheme creates secure car parking which
supports controlled access to each building.
The Results
A competition among the local community has
provided the tower blocks with new names and
the project as a whole seems to have given the
inhabitants a sense of involvement and a new lease
of life. |
