David Anderson,

Objectives

This was a difficult challenge to provide the College with a modern building in place of a Grade II listed building within the heart of the Victoria Park Conservation Area. The brief given to us by the College was to provide fully accessible state-of-theart IT and general teaching facilities (including a
purpose built media studies editing suite) within a contemporary new build envelope.

Our View
Working closely with the Conservation and Planning Authorities, we wanted to design an elegant building using a palette of materials synonymous with the character of the conservation area, in a contemporary manner: such as the use of pre-patinated copper as wall cladding to announce
the Main Entrances.

With the campus being a mix of Grade I and Grade II Victorian buildings mixed with smaller new build additions we felt it was essential to create a building of equal architectural quality, both internally and externally.

Inside, large open plan corridors with full height glazed light wells create a sense of openness and spatial quality, whilst full length glazing along the west elevation provides beautiful views over the College green and to the Victoria Park area. Every teaching space has been very carefully planned out
following lengthy and detailed consultations with the end users.

The Results
This was an immensely successful project which was completed on time, on budget and on brief.
