Objectives
The main objective was to produce a
functional, modern and economic solution to
the schools increasing numbers and continually
developing aspirations.
The complex challenge was to provide the school
with an extension which would link seamlessly to
the existing building, working very closely with the
staff to ensure that all day-to-day requirements were
considered along with the longer term ambitions.
Our View
We developed a scheme which would see the new
classrooms linked with a practical activity space to
the existing building. A bold curved rendered wall
was envisaged to announce the new entrance with
a splash of the school’s colour – visually linking the
new build to the existing.
A simple palette of materials was chosen to
complement the existing building and the leafy
surroundings of the school. Load bearing masonry
construction with a timber truss roof form the main
body of the building with cedar clad ‘story corners’
projecting from the classroom spaces.
The practical space to the rear of the building links
the two classrooms together and offers provision for
more messy activities. This space can be opened out
onto the rear playground and the children can
continue outdoors, sheltered by the glazed canopy
which spans the entire rear of the building.
Results
Pupils, staff and teachers are delighted with their
new learning space. The extension to the school has
been well received by all who use it and the building continues to mature well alongside its older
neighbour. |
