Community Housing Sector Case Study:
Bow Lane,
Preston
Client: Collingwood Housing Association (now Contour) Cost: £3.3m

Objectives
We were asked to create a design for a
competition to develop this central site opposite
County Hall, Preston. Our winning design needed
to accommodate a mix of homes from two bed
starter to five bed family homes for the local,
mainly Asian population.
Our View
The original design brief provided by the planners,
whilst concise and valuable, left potential problems
for our client. The request for footpaths through the
site could have created the potential for anti-social
behaviour. We worked through the issues and, with
the support of the ‘Secure By Design’ Officer,
designed-out the problems. A desire for apartments
on the key frontage was overcome by specific
design details of the houses to create an
appropriate street presence in a family housing
environment.
The Results
Housing for shared ownership was sold entirely offplan.
The layout provides a vibrant community
setting and a new focus for the renewal of the area. |
