Objectives
The client wanted an innovative care home,
originally for 60 older people with care needs.
This would replace its existing 1960s and 70s care
homes in the vicinity of this site. The new home was
not to be a ‘warehouse for older people.’ said Huw
John, Chief Executive of Manchester Care.
There was a requirement for greater longevity with
the flexibility to accommodate a rapidly changing
clientele, with the likelihood of more dependent
residents within a few years.
Our View
We created a scheme which could accommodate
over 100 beds comfortably, with generous space
standards, and impressive from floor to ceiling.
We designed features to help people with varying
stages of dementia, including the elimination of
corridors on upper floors.
We felt it essential to ensure high levels of natural
light to lift the spirits and help those with poorer
eyesight. Interior design was equally important with
the inspired inclusion of ‘memory boxes’. These
perspex boxes contain an individual’s personal
effects to help stimulate memory and help them
recognise their own room.
We were also keen to create an excellent working
environment for staff, incorporating the latest
technology to enable quality time with the residents.
The Results
The larger size of the scheme is handled well, with
nine smaller independent households.
‘There is a sense of calm and peacefulness which
was not present in any of our older, smaller homes.’
Lorraine Tatlock, Care Director of Manchester Care. |
