Care Sector Case Study:
Mariners Park,
Wallasey
Client: Oceanair/Numast Welfare Funds
Cost: £3m
|
 |
Objectives
To provide a state-of-the-art 32 bed care home
and 14 flats for retired mariners to replace older
and outdated facilities. The care home was the first
in the North West Region to comply with the
Government’s new Care Standards Act 2000.
Our View
Our overall interpretation of the brief was to
create two striking buildings in a residential parkland
setting, making the best of the commanding views
over the Mersey Estuary.
In order to comply with the latest care standards
the scheme was designed to be homely,
un-institutional, of human scale and with architectural
homage paid to its nautical setting and context.
The care home features external sun decks which
cantilever over the river embankment and overlook
the water and shipping lane. The overall impression
is warm, light and airy.
The flats feature an external first floor access
walkway with balconies to take in the view towards
the Mersey and Royal Liver Building beyond.
Externally, the design made strong use of
exposed steel and resin timber cladding, reflecting
a modern and human interpretation of traditional,
seaside architecture.
The Results
Opened by HRH the Princess Royal, the project has
proved highly successful and has received a number of
commendations.
It is, in many ways the forerunner to a succession of
highly successful schemes for which Pozzoni Design
Group has fast become one of the UK’s leading
professionals and authorities in elderly care design. |
